International Market Profile

A number of international markets hold significant promise for Oregon: Canada, Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom in particular. Research has shown that while international visitors comprise only 9 percent of Oregon's out-of-state visitors (and 5 percent of total visitors), international travelers represent a growth market for Oregon. In addition:

  • The average foreign visitor stays longer (11 days in Oregon) and spends more ($96 per day) than domestic out-of-state visitors (7.5 days and $84 per day).
  • International visitors tend to be younger; have a college degree (59 percent); and hold a white-collar job (78 percent).
  • International visitors are more likely to be visiting Oregon for the first time (53 percent) than domestic out-of-state visitors (30 percent).
The data contained here have been compiled from research conducted for the International Trade Administration (ITA) by CIC Research, Inc., and from the Oregon Tourism Commission's visitor profile, conducted by Davidson-Peterson Associates, Inc. Complete research reports and an international marketing plan are available from the commission (503-986-0000).
